Launching a New Website:
How Much Does It Cost?
We do our best to be transparent about the costs of launching a website here at FlyingFish Web Design. Of course, there is the cost of the design and development hours which are included in our customer quotes. You can get a rough idea of these on our new websites page. But it is important to be aware that launching a website has other costs beyond the initial design and build. We’ve done our best to outline these additional costs below.
Domain (URL) Costs:
This is your website address (for ex https://yourwebsitedomain.com).
These are annual costs, normally covered by the client so the ownership of their domain stays with them. They are usually in the region of €10 to €50 a year, though this can vary greatly depending on what domain name you are seeking to register. Often you will get a reduced rate for the first year of registration. If you need advice on registering your domain, please talk to us.
Premium Plugin Licenses:
We may need one or two of these for your website. WordPress uses ‘plugins’ which are essentially apps for your website. Some of these require premium licenses as they are updated regularly to ensure features continue to work. On average, these licenses will usually cost around €120 a year. If required, we recommend you purchase these so you retain ownership of any software licenses used on your website. We will confirm if any plugin licenses are required after we start the project and scope your exact requirements in more detail.
Website Care:
Following the completion of your project, we offer Website Care & Support to keep your website running smoothly and updated. These start at €60 (excluding VAT) a month for the essentials (updates + support + adjustments + basic website hosting).
Or, for €300 a month, we can take a much more active role in adding new content to your site, with a monthly catch-up call included. We can also work out a more bespoke care package based on your exact requirements.
You can learn more about our Website Care plans here.
Website Hosting
Once your site is launched, it will require a server (hosting) to work. This is the folder where all the files and code for your website will be stored online. You may pay a third party for your own server/hosting, or else we can provide it.
Please note, If you choose to go with a third party for web hosting, our Website Care (see above) will cover updates to your website but will not cover server maintenance, server updates or server back-ups.
If you are planning to go with us for Website Care, we can provide our Shared Web Hosting plan for free, or more advanced hosting for larger websites at a reduced rate.
Our Green Shared Website Hosting is our most popular option. It is optimised for WordPress websites (helps with speed) and comes with full HTTPS/SSL certification (for security), daily backups and other security measures
You can find information on our various server options here.
Talk to us closer to launch about server options if you are interested.
Hosting Partners:
Our hosting plans are provided via our sustainable server partners, GreenGeeks (with local servers based in the USA and the Netherlands). GreenGeeks has offered fantastic support and reliable hosting over the years we have worked with them.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
Essential SEO work is included in this quote to ensure you are listed on Google and other search engines. But for more advanced SEO work, which will give you the best chance of appearing higher in search rankings, we recommend working with our partner SEO & Grow.
Please ask us about this if you are interested in advanced SEO services such as: competitor analysis & keyword research, on-site keyword optimisation, monitoring, link-building and/or content-building. This quote does not cover these services.
Recommended: Change Budget
While we are confident in our quotes, we always advise our clients to try to reserve an additional 20% of their project cost as budget for unanticipated changes or new ideas.
This extra budget is not usually required but ensures that if you would like to request any additional work to your website, then there is some budget available.
This could cover:
- Additional revisions or changes required (beyond those already included).
- Adding extra pages or functionality beyond those anticipated in this quote.
The change budget is not normally needed. It is intended only as a safety net.
For example, for a project quoted at €3000 we would recommend a change budget of €600 (20%). This is optional and is rarely required.
